February Fun

We are having a blast in kindergarten this month!  We had a great time providing the entertainment for this month's PTO meeting.

We celebrated Valentine's Day with a focus on friendship.  We reviewed being a peacemaker and how to be a GOOD friend.  You have to be a friend if you want to have a friend!  They chose a friend for lunch for everyday and made really cute love bug hats!  We ended the celebration with a Valentine exchange and party, Tuesday aftenoon.

Tomorrow we are going to the Fine Art Center to see Jack Hartmann in concert!!!  Friday we will have Career Day.  What better way to learn about Careers than to experience them?!

Welcome 2012

January is a busy month in Kindergarten!  DIBELS testing is done and we are having fun!  We just completed a unit on Winter including winter, snowmen and all about weather.  We ended the unit with a week devoted to learning about matter.  I introduced matter with a video showing us that all things are matter and can be in the form of solid, liquid or gas.  We started the investigation with a glass of ice and an electric skillet and we discovered that water can be in the form of solid, liquid or gas.  We painted with snow cubes which mysteriously began a solid and ended a liquid.  The experiment the children loved the most was discovering the fastest way to melt an ice cube!

January 16th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  We learned that all people deserve to be treated with love and respect.  We are thankful that Dr. King's hard work has helped to enable that we can live his dream and achieve our dreams.  We have big dreams!!!

This week we are learning about penguins and other antarctic animals.  Our class has decided that we would not like to be a penguin.  Ice water is cold even when you cover your hand with "blubber"!  The chilren also thought that the dad has a difficult task of carrying his baby on his feet! We did have fun trying it out though!

January 26th is the 100th day of school  We had an all day celebration.  We made our own 100's tray to count our objects by 10's to 100.  We ate 100 snacks, threaded 100 beads and painted 100 dots.  Now the countdown to first grade begins.

We are off to a great start!

Kindergarten is off to a great start.  We are having so much fun and learning too!!!  The past two weeks we have been introducing the alphabet from A - Z.  We have learned to put our class names in ABC order.

We have also been learning "All About Me".  We completed all about me books with our names, families and birthday.  We labeled head, shoulders, knees and toes and learned to sing it too!  We finished the unit with our five senses.

We had so much fun tasting sour gummy worms, smelling scented bubbles, watching the bubbles fly (and chasing them).  We touched cotton balls and learned what our five senses are and how we use them.  We had a blast.  I am so excited by our students' desire to learn.  They are soaking everything up like little sponges.

Super Star's First Week of Kindergarten

We have had an exciting first week.  I have enjoyed getting to know my students this week.  We have had a lot of fun and learned a lot too!  We even chose a name for our class - Mrs. Brown's Super Stars.  We read Harold and the Purple Crayon  and then created our own purple story to share with the class.  We also learned that red and blue make purple.

We celebrated two birthday's this week (Happy Birthday Jobani and Nevaeh!).

We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and had a visit from a Chicka Chicka Letter Tree.

We ended the week with the color green.  We made a turtle by mixing yellow and blue to make green.  We ended the day with Green Eggs and Ham. We tasted green eggs and ham with another class and decided that most of our students did like green eggs and ham!  We ended our week with our first trip to the treasure box and then I sent seventeen very tired kindergarteners home to rest.
